Crafting on a budget

Posted on 25 October 2008 by Tracey Grundy

Not everyone can afford to buy the latest and greatest crafting gadget, paper or embellishment and this is when normal every day items around the house can be transformed with very little cost.  So, ‘bin it’ or ‘change it’? – the decision is yours.

Tracey Grundy has taken an empty washing tablet box and transformed it into a wonderful box just for ATCs.

ATC Altered Box - Step 1

ATC Altered Box Step 1 - You will need a normal every day box. In this example we are using an 'Own Brand Washing Machine Tablet' box which also has the right kind of proportions for what this box is going to be made into, i.e. for ATCs.

ATC Altered Box Step 2 - Having decided on the colour combination for the box, ink the edges in brown to colour over the blue of the box.

ATC Altered Box - Step 3 - Use the box sides as a template to cut out the preferred coloured paper and adhere.

ATC Altered Box Step 4 - After adhering the paper to the box, ink the edges with brown ink to blend in with the box. Attach embellishments such as brads with flowers or adhere other embellishments with PVA Glue.

ATC Altered Box Step 5 - Here we have the finished ATC box, completely transformed. To further save money, you can also create your own 'faux chipboard' letters by using cardboard from cereal boxes and adhere scraps of paper and decorate, as can be seen here.

You are now challenged to ‘think before you bin’ and stretch your imagination to the extreme and create something wonderful from nothing at none or very little cost.  With Christmas coming ever increasingly closer, this is the ideal reason to have another look through those boxes or tins and change them into great personalised gifts.

I like this Tracey. My wash tablets don’t come in boxes like this any more though. Shame, I may have to switch brands! Lol.

Tracey, you have answered a question that has been rattling round in my head for a while. What to do with an empty eash-tab box I covered a few months ago? I have been using it for bits’n'bobs….but not really decorated it beyond some pretty backing paper!!
Using it as an ATC box is such a great idea….why didn’t I think of that?!
Thanks again Tracey for more fab inspiration!
