Envelope Bags Tutorial

Posted on 24 October 2008 by Tracey Grundy

To make an envelope bag like this you will need:

* Envelope

* Ruler

* Scoring tool

* Adhesive

* Your imagination

1. Take a normal envelope. Here we have a C5 buff coloured gummed envelope.

2. Obviously this will still look like an envelope, so cut the top off the envelope just under the opening.  Next take a ruler and line the outer edge up with the edge of the envelope. Use the ruler width to measure where you are to score the envelope on the inner edge of the ruler.

3. Score the left, bottom and right of the envelope (do not score the top as this is your opening). Also line up your ruler with the crossover point of the scored lines at the bottom with the corner of the envelope and score diagonally. Do this on the left and on the right of the envelope. Fold all of the scored lines in over then turn the envelope over and fold them the other way (don’t forget the diagonal scored line too). This may be easier if you use a bone folder to ensure crisp creases.

4. Now that all the creases are nice and crisp on the flat, take the envelope and turn it upside and stick your hand in.  With your other hand pinch in the creases until you have something which resembles this picture on the right.

5. Once this has been done, take the ‘ears’ fold them in-over and adhere them to the bottom of the bag. When this has been done, turn it over and you now have your envelope bag.  How easy was that?

Here are some more examples of envelope bags.
